BATES àKaren Sue Waskom of Key Largo was born on September 12, 1953, and passed away on March 15, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, James Bud Bates (who has worked with Monroe County for 20 years); her son Dale and Christi Pleamons of Stevenson, MD; 3 grand children: Lauren and Mike Vanmeter and their daughters Bella and Lizzy of Stevenson, MD; Cortney and Bob Liddy and their son Robby of AZ; Brett Pleamons (a high school senior) all of Stevenson, MD; her mother Edith Waskom; her brother Tim and Nora Waskom; niece Tara Heidle all of Dallas, TX; nephew Eric and Misti of Seagoville, TX; Buds son Joey Bates of Deerfield Beach, FL; and her best friends of 40 years, Stanley and Darlene Black of AK. àKaren worked at K-Mart, Publix, Marr Realty and Barbara Eads Realty. Karen loved to watch NASCAR, football, and Little League Baseball and she enjoyed the water whether fishing, swimming, or boating. àThe family has requested in lieu of flowers please make donations to Upper Keys Little League program or FLKYSF basketball program. BONOSORO à Umberto Al Bonosoro, Chief Engineer, U.S. Merchant marine. Born January 15, 1924. Crossed the bar April 7, 2012. Son of Francesco Bonosoro and Antionette Scalera Bonosoro. à A U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific aboard the LCI (L) 709. After an Honorable Discharge from active duty, he entered the United States Merchant Marine. He served on various types of U.S. Flagged Merchant Ships during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and during Peacetime spanning over 30 years. à His last sea going position as Chief Engineer was aboard the container vessel SS Export Patriot. à He was proceeded in death by his brothers Americo and Alfredo Bonosoro and is survived by sisters Yolanda Melchionna and Mary Zurlo, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in the United States and Mesagne, Italy. à His cremains will be committed to the sea.

FAVALORO àFrank Favaloro passed away in his home surrounded by the love of his wife Judy, three of his children Michael, Joseph and Donna and his brother in law and good friend Bobby; and held closely in the hearts and prayers of his other children: David, Debby, Chrissy, Lauree and their families including his grandchildren Justin, Nicole, Francis, Christina and Angelina. àThrough hard work, integrity and courage Frank beat long odds, creating a rich life for himself and giving his children a foundation on which they could build fulfilling lives for themselves and a code they could live that life by: honor, humility and loyalty. àFrank was a self-made business owner, an excellent fisherman and a Navy veteran but most importantly he was a friend who was good company in a foxhole, a husband who could make the fear of the trouble and danger in this world disappear for the moments when he held his wife, and a loving father who showed up for his children and worked to see and love them for who they were constantly becoming. àHe leaves all those he touched with an appreciation for his humor, capacity for wonder, his insistence on fairness and underneath a tough as nails exterior, a profound gentleness shown through quiet acts of kindness. He will be missed and remembered always. àServices will be held at the Big Pine Moose Lodge this Sunday, April 15th at 5 pm. All friends are welcome. The lodge is located at 3681 Wilder Road in Big Pine Key.

She was the county's animal control officer for 19 years and was involved with the local Humane Society. For 20 years she was a fixture at the Grassy Key Flea Market until it closed in 2010. LIERMANN à Emily Catherine Liermann, long time resident of Duck Key, passed away from a short illness on April 14th. She was born on the family farm, to Michael and Elizabeth Thomas Burton of Fredonia, Wisconsin. The Liermann family moved to the Keys in 1974. Her sons Mike and Mark enjoyed many unique adventures growing up in the Florida Keys. àEmily was one of the first Real Estate Brokers on Duck Key, and came to Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate in 1998. Emily and her business partner, Debra Grill, sold real estate together for over 18 years. à Survived by her sons, Mike, his wife Melissa, and Mark Liermann, and grandsons, Tyler and Kyle, of Tallahassee, Florida, her sister, Marcie Dietzman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and brothers Killian Burton of Belgium, WI, and Lambert Burton of Sheboygan, WI, Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Liermann. àEmily was loved by everyone, for her sense of humor, her graciousness, and her professional poise. She was a classy lady who always put everyone's needs before her own. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. à Memorial Services will be held at San Pablo Catholic Church, in Marathon, Florida, at 11:00am, Saturday, April 28th. GALLAGHER à Dan Gallagher, friend of Marathon, left town permanently on Friday, April 20, 2012 after 23 years in the place that grew to become his favorite spot in the world. Dan retired to Marathon after nearly 20 years as a professor at Salisbury University. His highest educational honor was a Ph.D. from Lehigh University. His best educational experiences came from learning about the marine communities in the Florida Keys, where, as a licensed captain, Dan taught youth and adults in the field about the special environment. Over the years Dan was an educator in a number of ways. For several years Dan worked at Seacamp (on Big Pine Key) and with Mote Marine Laboratory at their Summerland Key facility as Education Coordinator. He published several books, notably as the editor of the Florida Keys Environmental Story. He was a charter officer on the Pigeon Key Foundation and was their Education Director at Pigeon Key for six years. In Marathon Dan is primarily remembered as the author of three histories of the community, including Marathon 1906-1960. He also published a major history of the construction of the Flagler railroad, Florida's Great Ocean Railway. Other historical contributions include models and videos now on display at the Key West Arts and Historical Society. àHe is survived by his wife, Rita Irwin of Grassy Key, son Jay Gallagher (plus two grandchildren) and daughter Jill Olson (also two grandchildren), both living in Maryland. There will be a celebration for local friends to be announced. Donations in his honor can be Dolphin Research Center or the Marathon Community theater.

HEESCHEN àDavid Sutphin Heeschen, 86, died peacefully on April 13, 2012 at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on March 12,1926 to Richard George Heeschen and Emily Sutphin Heeschen and was the oldest of three siblings. His beloved wife Eloise, whom he married in 1950, preceded him in death. Dr. Heeschen received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from University of Illinois in 1949 and 1951, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Astronomy from Harvard University in 1954. After teaching for a year at Wesleyan University, he returned to Harvard in 1955 as a lecturer and research associate. He worked at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) beginning in 1956 and was the Director from 1962 to 1978. Between Heeschen's arrival at NRAO and the end of his time as Director, NRAO grew from an idea and plan to a major world center for radio astronomy. à Following his resignation as Director, Heeschen served briefly as Assistant Director for Tucson Operations, Assistant Director for Socorro Operations, and as Acting Project Manager during the initial phases of work on the Green Bank Telescope. He retired from NRAO in December 1991, but continued to pursue his research interests and to advise on NRAO projects. Development of the NRAO into a highly respected observatory serving the needs of hundreds of astronomers around the world, and the development of the VLA, were the two accomplishments of Dr. Heeschen's directorship of which he was most proud. àOutside astronomy, Heeschen was a sports car enthusiast having raced Austin-Healey Sprites for several years and having owned a number of classic sports and muscle cars. He was also an avid sailor of 30 years and in his Schooner Delight made several trips to Bermuda and the Caribbean. In addition, he and his late wife Eloise, were heavily involved as Ham Radio Operators and enjoyed scuba diving for a number of years. à Dr. Heeschen was a member of the American Astronomical Society, where he served as President from 1980-1982, a member of the International Astronomical Union, where he served as a Vice President and member of the Executive Committee from 1976-1981, and of the International Scientific Radio Union, the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Heeschen has said he always felt very privileged to have had a career in astronomy and to have been able to associate with and serve so many talented astronomers and engineers throughout his career. His wife Eloise and extended family were a constant source of love and support. àDr. Heeschen lived in Charlottesville/Earlysville VA. For 31 years. In 1996, he and Eloise moved to Marathon, FL. There he was active at St. Columba Church, did volunteer work at Switlik Elementary School and Crane Point Hammock, and was on the Board of Directors of the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust. àHe is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dixon Hammon of York PA. And their children Joshua, Isaac and Leah Hammon, his son and daughter-in-law, David and Eleni Heeschen of Charlottesville, VA and their children George and David Heeschen and Libby Moore, and his son and daughter-in-law Richard and Linda Heeschen of Charlottesville, VA and their children Rachael and Kira Heeschen. He is also survived by his sister and her husband Elizabeth and Wayne Raley of Grass Valley, CA and his sister and her husband Catherine and Earl Wear of Rock Island, IL. àA memorial service is being planned for May 21, 2012 in Charlottesville (location to be announced). Steve McCurdy àSteve F. McCurdy passed away on Tuesday, April 17th in Ocala, Florida from complications from lung cancer and heart disease. He was 61 years old. He leaves behind his wife Ruth E. McCurdy w/Step children Anthony & Melissa Mirto, Daughter Dawn Cale, with granddaughter Cheyenne and husband Eddie, Son Dustin Lang with Grandchildren Ethan & Cassidy with wife Heather, Brother Jimmy Pash with his wife Dottie, dogs Rocky and Hunter. He was married to four women over his lifetime who loved him dearly, three of which survive him. àSteve lived in the Keys for 20+ years. He Joined the Marines at age 16 and served his country in Vietnam, coming home to an angry country. It was something he struggled with his entire life. He was very passionate about Veteran Issues and helped many of our local veterans. He lived a very adventurous life and said that he would not have change it if he could. He was very active in local social organizations and he helped a lot of people. He was able to truly embrace his Higher Power and felt he was right with God saying he was not afraid to die. His only regrets were that he hurt and pushed away the people he loved. He had a good soul he will be missed by many. àServices were held on Sunday April 22 in Key Largo and were well attended. HARRIS à Jeff Harris, born May 21, 1970, left the world unexpectedly, like a shooting star, on March 31, 2012. He was 42 years old. à He was a new member at the Key Largo Moose Lodge. He moved to the Florida Keys from Georgia. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. à He was known for his great sense of humor, beautiful smile and famous words only in Key Largo . He leaves behind all who loved him and his pirate crew at 64 Silver Springs Drive, Key Largo, FL along with friends in Key West, Marathon and Tavernier. à A celebration of life will be held at the Key Largo Park, MM 100 Bayside at sunset on Saturday, May 19 to honor his life.

CULLEN à Bill Cullen, 63, died suddenly April 19, 2012. He was born in Holland, MI, to Russell and Anne Cullen. He moved to the Keys with his family in 1965, and graduated from Coral Shores High School and Pratt Institute, School of Architecture, in NY. à Bill was a unique, creative individual with many talents, from singing Sinatra to design and construction. He loved to travel and made friends wherever he went. à Bill is survived by his children, Anne and Noah Cullen, his mother, Anne Cullen, his sisters Marianne (Jim) Roper, Colleen (Tony) Hammon, Fran (Mike) Young, and his brothers, Russell (Daryl) Cullen, Patrick (Monica) Cullen, his ex wife Tanya Cleary, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends. à A memorial service will be held at 2 pm May 12 at Island Community Church in Islamorada, followed by a celebration of Bill's life at the Caribbean Club, Key Largo, beginning at 5 pm. All who knew him are invited to come and share their memories.

ZERR àWilliam Zerr passed away at home on April 28, 2012. He was born in Lutherville, MD September 26, 1931 to William Thomas Zerr and Lorena Stith Zerr. àMr. Zerr was a 1953 graduate of Johns Hopkins University. The university remained Bill's client throughout his career until his retirement in 2003. He was author of Inspection, Maintenance and Repair of Roofing Systems tri-service manual of the Army, Navy and Air Force. The United States Army Corps of Engineers now has this manual on the internet. àDuring his 31 year career as an Independent Roofing Consultant, Bill consulted with many architects and engineers and served as an expert witness in many legal cases. He also had prior experience in building construction, concrete products, and land surveying. àBill had many interests including Jazz, traveling, canoeing, crabbing, Johns Hopkins lacrosse, cooking on the grill no matter the weather, and spending winters in the Florida Keys. Bill will especially be remembered for his courage and positive spirit during his long illness. Bill attended Wicomico Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, and Presbyterian Kirk of the Keys in Marathon, FL. àHe is survived by his wife Betty Hudson Zerr, a son Jeffrey Zerr and his wife Allison of Union Bridge, MD; a daughter-in-law Mimi Zerr of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren Rena Elizabeth Zerr, Katie Zerr, Maggie Zerr, and Michael Zerr; stepchildren Susan McGaha and husband Patrick of Winter Springs, FL, Thomas Smith and wife Linda of Salisbury, Karen Tyndall Kociolek and husband Peter of Madeira Beach, FL; step-grandchildren Patrick McGaha of Baton Rouge, LA, Scott McGaha of New Port Richie, FL, Kevin McGaha of Winter Springs, FL, Bryan Smith and wife Sarah of Salisbury, Jeremy Smith of Greenville, SC, Barbara Morgan of Kannapolis, NC, Robert Morris of Salisbury, and Sara Kociolek of Madeira Beach, FL; and four great-grandchildren. Katherine Kay Stinson Boudle July 24, 1932 - April 25, 2012 àKatherine Kay Stinson Boudle, 79, of Hamilton, GA and a former long term resident of Key Largo, FL died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital. àA private memorial service was held according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. àMrs. Boudle was born July 24, 1932 in Stratford, NH daughter of the late Bert and Gertrude Hapgood Stinson.
